THE SERIOUSNESS OF SIN

As a prank, some students at a college snatched the mascot—a goat—from the campus of a nearby rival school. After they had the goat in their custody, they were faced with the problem of where to keep it. When two of the students volunteered to keep the animal in their dorm room, someone asked about the smell. The two answered, “Don’t worry, the goat will get used to it.”

It’s amazing how some people can get used to the stench they live in. But we need to know that God will never get used to the stench of sin in our lives. Because God is completely holy, meaning that He is separate and unique and can not be in the presence of unrighteousness, He will never adapt Himself to sin. While we as fallen human beings can easily get used to sin, God can not.

But what exactly is sin? The Bible defines sin as anything and everything that is contrary to the holiness of God. In a nutshell, sin is violation of the laws and regulations of God, who has put those laws and regulations in place to reflect for us His character and His holiness.

We must clearly understand that violating God’s laws always carries with it consequences. As the apostle Paul put it, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption” (Galatians 6:7).

The basic truth that sin always comes with consequences was demonstrated in the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve both suffered for what they had done.
